Online piano lessons for adults who quit as kids, or never started.

You don't need talent. You need 15 minutes and a keyboard.

Studio Tempo is a 12-level path of short video lessons made for grown-up hands and grown-up evenings. Pick the song you've always wanted to play, practice 15 minutes a day, and ask a real teacher anything every Tuesday night.

How a lesson works

Every lesson fits in 15 minutes, and tells you when you're done.

Lessons are 3 to 7 minutes of video, then you play along at a speed you choose. The app counts your practice, so you stop wondering whether you did enough.

The path

Twelve levels, from middle C to Clair de Lune.

Each level is 25 to 40 short lessons and ends with a song you can play for someone. You always know which lesson is next, and you can repeat a level as many times as you like.

Timings are what we see from members who practice about 5 days a week. Nobody is timed, nothing expires, and the level test is one short recording you can retake whenever you want.

    The song library

The songs you wanted to play at ten, each in three versions.

Play the starter version in your first months. Come back to the same song a year later and play the real thing. 180+ songs today, with 4 new arrangements every month.

Starter: right-hand melody, simple left-hand notes
Middle: both hands, the real harmony, easier rhythm
Full: the arrangement you hear on the recording

Most of our members started after 40. Here are three of them.

“I played Clair de Lune at my daughter's wedding. Fourteen months earlier I couldn't find middle C.”

    58Renee H., Tucson. Level 9, member since July 2025

“I quit at nine because practice was a punishment. Now I play Let It Be for my kids at bedtime, badly, and they ask for it anyway.”

    44Marcus T., Columbus. Level 5 after 7 months

“I had never touched a piano. I bought a $160 keyboard with 61 keys and played Moon River at my book club in June.”

    71Dolores A., Rochester. Level 6 after 10 months

    Monthly recital notes, August 2026

    Renee H., Level 9

Clair de Lune, middle arrangement. Recording 3:52.

    • Your left-hand rolls are even now. In May they bunched up. Listen back to both and hear the difference.
    • Bar 27: lift the pedal on beat 1 so the new chord doesn't blur into the old one.
    • You slow down before the key change. Play it twice at 60 bpm with the click, then once without.
    • The ending is lovely. Hold the last chord two full seconds before you lift your hands.

    Your teacher

Nadia Okafor has taught adult beginners for 16 years.

Before Studio Tempo, Nadia ran the adult program at a community music school in Philadelphia. Her students were nurses, retirees and parents who practiced after the kids went to bed. She films every core lesson and hosts the live Q&A every Tuesday. Staff teachers Priya Shah and Tom Reyes write the monthly recital notes.

“Most adults I teach quit at nine because practice felt like a punishment. Here it's fifteen minutes, and you pick the song.”

    Questions

What adults ask before their first lesson.

Something else? Email hello@studiotempo.com and a teacher replies within one business day.

Do I need 61 keys or 88 keys?

Start with what you have. 61 keys covers the first eight levels. You only need the full 88 for some full arrangements in Levels 9 to 12.

61 keysLevels 1 to 8 and most starter and middle songs. Good ones start around $150.
88 keysEvery arrangement, including full Clair de Lune. Good ones start around $450.

If a song runs off the end of your keyboard, the app shifts it by an octave for you.

How much time do I need each day?

The path is built on 15 minutes a day, 5 days a week. Every lesson shows how long it takes, and the app tells you when today's 15 minutes are done. Members who practice 3 days a week still move forward, about half as fast.

I can't read music. Is that a problem?

No. Level 1 starts with five notes around middle C, and the notes appear on the staff as you play them, the same way the practice card at the top of this page works. Reading is added a few notes at a time through Level 3, so you learn it while playing songs.

    I don't own a keyboard yet.

Start the trial anyway. The first 6 lessons of Level 1 work on the on-screen piano in the app. Our buying guide lists four keyboards from $149 to $599, with the exact models our teachers test on.

    Do I need weighted keys?

Not at the start. Weighted keys feel closer to an acoustic piano and help in the later levels. The must-have is touch-sensitive keys, which play louder when you press harder. Every keyboard in our guide has them.

What happens when the trial ends, and how do I cancel?

Two days before your trial ends we email you the date and the amount. If you do nothing, your plan starts on day 7. To cancel, open Account, then Membership, then Cancel. No phone call, no survey to get through. Cancel during the trial and you're never charged.

Am I too old to start?

About a third of our members are over 60, and our oldest is 84. Lessons are filmed for adult hands: no stretches wider than your hand allows, and a warm-up for stiff fingers at the start of every level.

Fifteen minutes tonight. Ode to Joy with both hands by next month.

7 days free, a reminder 2 days before you're charged, and cancelling takes 2 clicks.
